Prenatal Massage Therapy Safety Essentials Home Study Course
Many therapists are not interested in specializing in perinatal massage therapy. They just want to give a safe, relaxing prenatal massage when called upon. To do so requires understanding of how pregnancy’s demands change practice guidelines. That involves detailed, didactic information. Some students quickly tire and become less involved in that material in a classroom setting. In this home study course, students work at their own pace and in their own style as they:
Learn safe and comfortable prenatal positioning, technique contraindications, and the physiological and anatomical rationale behind these adaptations to usual practice protocols.Explore selected techniques to address common needs of women having low risk, uncomplicated pregnancies. Learn the basics of how to promote a more relaxed and less painful birthing process. Gain an understanding of the postpartum woman’s emotional and physical needs.
Students thoroughly study the course text, Pre- and Perinatal Massage Therapy, to get the theoretical understanding to safely adapt their own protocols and techniques to normal pregnancy concerns. They develop resources for both general prenatal information and specific guidance for massage therapy applications; they know exactly where to find this information when that expectant woman is on their schedule. This is the course for those who prefer more independent learning or who need a very economical venue to learn the basics of maternity massage therapy. Home study tuition includes text, assessment materials and a 20-minute consult with a home study tutor (optional). Receive seven CE hours (.7 CEU credits with NCBTMB) with satisfactory performance on the assessment materials. Please note that this is NOT a certification course; if you are seeking specialization certification, please see the course Pre- and Perinatal Massage Therapy. Additional required enrollment terms provided upon registration. - PLEASE SEE LINK ABOVE. Recommended additional reading is "Pregnancy, Childbirth and the Newborn" by Penny Simkin, Janet Wahaley, and Ann Kepler and "Essential Exercises for the Childbearing Year" by Elizabeth Noble. Both of these books can be ordered separately from our bookstore.
